Do Swedish citizens need a visa for Canada? No, but a Swedish passport needs an eTA before boarding any plane that lands in or connects through Canada. Sweden is on Canada’s eTA list, so the Canada eTA for Sweden is an online authorization that replaces a visa for short stays. A single visit is usually capped at about six months, and the authorization runs for as long as five years, or less if the passport ends first. The place to apply for a Canada eTA is get-eta.com, a private, paid service independent of the Government of Canada. Crossing the border by road or rail, or arriving on a ship, needs nothing beyond a valid passport.

Other passports follow the same logic, and the two documents are set side by side in our piece on the difference between an eTA and a visitor visa.

Canada visa for Swedish citizens: is there one?

For a holiday, a visit to relatives or a short business trip, there is no visa to request. What a Swedish traveller needs depends on the trip.

  • Holiday or visit to family: an eTA, obtained before you board.
  • A year of work in Canada: a permit through the youth mobility programme described below. If the permit is approved ahead of departure, the eTA arrives with it.
  • Changing planes in Canada on the way to a third country: an eTA, as explained further down.
  • Crossing by road, rail or boat: nothing beyond a valid passport.

For air travel the airline checks the authorization at check-in, and the system links it to the passport number you entered. After the flight, an officer at the border decides whether you may enter. The eTA does not guarantee that decision, it only lets you board.

Working Holiday visa Canada: Sweden’s three options

An eTA never allows you to work. Swedes who want to earn money in Canada look at International Experience Canada, usually shortened to IEC, and Sweden takes part in three categories: Working Holiday, International Co-op (Internship) and Young Professionals. A search for working holiday options for Swedes therefore does lead somewhere. Anyone checking a canada work visa for Swedish citizens will find that these three are the realistic routes, and each one is limited to people aged 18 to 30 inclusive.

What it is for Travelling while taking odd jobs Experience in your own field An internship that belongs to your studies
Job offer needed first? No Yes, signed Yes, signed
Length Up to 12 months Up to 12 months Up to 12 months

Under the table sit the conditions shared by the three categories, taken from the Sweden entries in the IEC eligibility page. You need a passport that stays valid for the whole stay, at least 2,500 CAD to start with, health insurance for the entire period, a return ticket or enough money to buy one, and no dependants coming along. Those who will work in Quebec should know that the provincial health plan does not cover repatriation, which IEC insists on, so extra cover is needed there.

Sweden also allows two participations, with the second one in a different category from the first. A person could, for example, take a Working Holiday first and a Young Professionals permit later. Repeating the same category is not possible.

Swedish citizen living abroad?

The conditions ask you to prove residence in Sweden, and the way to do it is to give either a residential or a postal address in the country. A Swedish citizen currently living elsewhere therefore needs such an address when applying.

Once a first work permit is granted, an eTA is generated automatically, with its number shown in the approval letter. Filing a separate application or paying again is unnecessary.

Changing planes in Canada on the way elsewhere

A layover in Canada counts as a flight into the country. Air transit through Canada calls for an eTA from travellers of eTA countries, so a Swedish passport holder flying from Europe to, say, Mexico or the Caribbean with a connection at a Canadian airport should hold one. Passing through by rail, road or water does not trigger the requirement. For typical layover situations see our guide for transiting passengers.

Families: kids and Swedish-Canadian dual citizens

Canada makes no exception for age. Babies, children and teenagers on Swedish passports all need their own eTA, so a family of four holds four authorizations. A parent files each child’s application. On the form you answer yes to the question about applying for another person and to the one about a minor child, then enter the parent’s details, the child’s own passport number and the child’s name in the signature field. The email address may belong to the parent or the child.

Officers may also want a letter authorizing the child’s trip to Canada, for instance when the child is accompanied by one parent or by other adults. Keep that letter with the passports.

Swedish and Canadian at once

If you are a Canadian citizen as well, the eTA is not meant for you. Dual citizens of Canada cannot fly to Canada, or through it, on a foreign passport. They need a valid Canadian passport, and carrying both passports is sensible. The one exception concerns Canadian-American dual citizens, who may use either their US or their Canadian passport to fly. So a person with Swedish and Canadian nationality should skip the eTA and travel on the Canadian document. For the reasoning behind this, there is a separate explanation of which passport to board with if you hold two.

How long a Swedish passport holder can stay

A typical visit lasts around six months. At the border you can expect either a stamp in the passport or a visitor record showing your leave-by date. If you get neither, the stay is counted as six months from arrival, or less when the passport ends sooner.

The authorization lasts five years at most. It is tied to a single document, so a new passport means a new eTA. For Swedish passport travel to Canada, keep proof of onward plans where you can reach it, along with an invitation letter if someone is hosting you and a way to show you can pay for the trip.

Applying from Sweden: language, timing, emails

The online form exists only in English and French. Notes explaining each field are available as PDFs in several languages, but Swedish is not on that list, so keep a translation tool handy if English feels uncertain. The charge is non-refundable.

Many applications are approved in minutes, while a share of them take several days; for those, an email with the next steps arrives within 72 hours of applying. Our article on how long the eTA takes goes through what to expect.

Messages sometimes land in the junk folder, so look there before assuming nothing was sent. When the approval email comes, compare the passport number in it with the one in your passport character by character. If they differ, you need to apply again.

Where is my eTA? Tracking the application

Keep the application number from the confirmation, because tracking needs your passport details together with that number or your UCI, and a passport on its own is not enough. A page built for this sits at get-eta.com, a private paid service independent of the Government of Canada, where you can open the tool to check your eTA status.

A filing made directly on canada.ca carries just the application fee.

The short version

  1. A short visit on a Swedish passport needs no visa, but a flight landing in or connecting through Canada needs an eTA first.
  2. The fee is small; the eTA lasts five years at most and a stay is usually around six months.
  3. Overland or by sea, a valid passport suffices.
  4. Sweden is part of all three IEC categories: age 18 to 30, plus a Swedish address.
  5. Every child gets a separate eTA; a Swedish-Canadian dual citizen boards with the Canadian passport.

FAQ

Do I need a visa to go to Canada from Sweden? No visa is required. A Swedish passport holder only needs an eTA for the flight, with a small government fee. Another passport means another rule, so look up that country in Canada’s list.

Can I work in Canada as a Swedish citizen? Not on an eTA. Sweden takes part in IEC, which offers Working Holiday, International Co-op and Young Professionals to people aged 18 to 30 with an address in Sweden, each for up to 12 months.

Can I enter Canada without an eTA? By land or sea, yes, with a valid passport. A Swedish-Canadian dual citizen flies on the Canadian passport. A Swedish passport alone will not get you onto a plane to Canada.

Do EU passport holders need a visa for Canada? For a Swedish passport the answer is no visa, but an eTA. Holders of other EU passports should look up their own country in the list on canada.ca instead of assuming the same.

How long does a Canadian eTA last for a Swedish passport? Five years at most, or less when the passport ends earlier. A visit is typically around six months, but the border officer sets the final limit.
