The short answer: Halifax Stanfield (YHZ) is where many flights from Europe first touch Canada, so this is where you meet the border: a self-service kiosk, then a border services officer, then your bags. No one in Halifax asks you to show an eTA document. If you still need one, you can apply for a Canada eTA online; it is stored against your passport number, and your airline looks it up at check-in. What comes next depends on the trip: a ride into the city, a second flight within Canada, or a cruise. That link leads to a paid private service, separate from the Government of Canada.

Going straight to the government instead costs only the government fee, so the choice of route is yours. Whichever one you used, an approved eTA does not guarantee entry: the officer you meet in Halifax still decides whether you may come in.

The kiosk-and-officer routine is much the same at every large Canadian airport, and our walk-through of arriving at Toronto Pearson lays it out step by step. If Halifax is only the start of a cruise, the eTA rules for cruise and ferry passengers explain who needs what. This page sticks to what is particular to YHZ and to the trips people actually take from it.

Which flights from Europe land in Halifax, and who needs an eTA to board them?

Several European cities have a direct flight to Halifax, and a traveller with a passport from one of those countries needs an eTA before boarding. The table follows the airport’s own list of non-stop flights.

Flying from Airline (per the airport’s non-stop list) Passport that typically boards there, and what it needs
London Heathrow Air Canada, daily, year-round British citizen: eTA
London Gatwick WestJet British citizen: eTA
Edinburgh WestJet British citizen: eTA
Dublin WestJet Irish passport: eTA
Amsterdam WestJet Dutch passport: eTA
Paris WestJet French passport: eTA
Frankfurt Discover Airlines German passport: eTA
Zurich Edelweiss Swiss passport: eTA
Lisbon WestJet Portuguese passport: eTA
Barcelona WestJet Spanish passport: eTA
Reykjavik Icelandair Icelandic passport: eTA

All of those countries appear on the list of nationalities that need an eTA for air travel to Canada. Schedules change, and the airport itself says to confirm with the airline. Only the Heathrow flight is marked year-round on the list; the airport files Discover Airlines, Edelweiss and Icelandair among its summer seasonal carriers, so a route you saw in July may not run in November.

What decides the requirement is your passport, not the city you fly from. A US citizen boards without an eTA, and so does anyone who holds a Canadian visa, because the visa does that job instead. For the full sorting exercise, see this explainer on telling apart who needs a visa, an eTA or neither.

Get the eTA before you reach the check-in desk. In most cases the answer arrives within minutes, but some requests need several days, so do not leave it to the morning of the flight.

What does the border check look like when Halifax is your first stop in Canada?

Everyone who arrives in Halifax from outside Canada reports to the border agency, CBSA (Canada Border Services Agency). At YHZ that starts at a primary inspection kiosk, since the CBSA lists Halifax among the airports with kiosks. It also says self-service eGates exist for now only at Toronto Pearson, Terminal 1, so you will not find them here.

You can speed things up by preparing an Advance Declaration in the ArriveCAN app. YHZ appears among the participating airports, you can complete it up to 72 hours before the flight, and it opens separate express lanes. Keep the two numbers apart: that 72-hour window belongs to the declaration, and it has nothing to do with how long an eTA takes.

At the kiosk you scan your passport, have your photo taken, answer the declaration questions and collect a printed receipt for the officer. Fingerprints are checked only for some foreign nationals. Children under 14 who travel with you must use a kiosk too. With no stamp in your passport you may stay for six months counted from your arrival day, or until the passport expires if that is sooner, and you can ask the officer for a stamp once the kiosk is done.

Is Halifax Stanfield a big airport, and where are arrivals?

It is compact. According to the airport, there is one terminal building. Check-in for domestic and international flights sits on the main level, while check-in for flights to the United States is on the second level, above the Arrivals area. Its own figures list 25 operational gates, 12 of them with loading bridges.

Do not search for a “Terminal 2” in Halifax; the airport does not use that name. If your bag fails to appear, the airline’s baggage claim area is in Arrivals, and hours vary by airline. Anyone landing late can walk to the ALT Hotel, which the airport says is connected to the terminal building.

Flying on to Newfoundland or elsewhere in Canada: which document do you show?

You pass the border in Halifax if this is where you arrive from abroad, and the next leg is then a domestic flight. On that leg the airline is no longer looking for an eTA. It asks for identification, and a visitor without Canadian documents can use the travel document they used to enter Canada, which means the same passport. The name on it has to match your ticket and boarding pass.

According to the airport, non-stop flights run from Halifax to St. John’s, Deer Lake, Gander and Goose Bay, and also to Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Calgary. For a worked example of what airlines accept, read what ID an airline accepts on a flight inside Canada.

Baggage handling on this connection depends on the airline and the ticket. At check-in, ask the airline whether your bags are tagged through to the final airport, and ask the same about security screening before you go.

Flying into Halifax to join a cruise: do you need an eTA?

For the flight, yes. For the ship itself, no. In most cases Canada does not ask a traveller from an eTA country for an eTA when they arrive by boat, a cruise ship included, though a valid passport is still required. So there are two separate cases.

  1. You fly into Halifax and then board a ship. The flight lands in Canada, so the airline checks your eTA at the start of the journey.
  2. Your ship calls at Halifax after sailing from the United States or Europe. No eTA is needed, only a valid passport.

Passport holders who need a visa are in a different position: the visa is required on a cruise as well, even if you never leave the ship. A few nationalities have only a conditional eTA, usable by air alone, and those travellers need a visa when they come by sea.

The port sits in the city, so the trip from the airport is the same one you would take to downtown, covered further down.

Can you change planes in Halifax for the US or another country?

For the US, yes. According to the airport, American preclearance operates in Halifax: officers from CBP screen passengers before they leave, with check-in on the second level. The airport also says every passenger must be processed through it by 4:30 p.m., regardless of flight time. For a daytime arrival from Europe with a US connection, ask the airline before you buy the ticket whether the numbers work and what hours the US facility keeps.

For a connection to a third country Halifax differs from Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto Terminal 1: it is not on the CBSA list for Free Flow, which covers only those airports. A connecting passenger in Halifax therefore goes through the normal CBSA process. If your passport is on the eTA list, you need the eTA even for a layover. Entry rules for the United States are another matter, so check what the US requires for your own passport.

How do you get from Halifax Stanfield to downtown?

According to the airport’s driving directions, downtown Halifax is roughly 35 kilometres away along Highway 102; the airport sits at Exit 6. The airport does not publish a journey time, so plan the day around your flight rather than a figure.

Way into the city Where you find it at YHZ Worth knowing (per the airport)
Halifax Transit Regional Express 320 Tickets at the Ground Transportation Booth in Arrivals, sold around the clock Goes to downtown; bags allowed; cash needs exact change
Taxi or airport car service Curbside outside Arrivals Fare depends on the address; the airport suggests pre-booking outside peak times
Uber or Lyft Designated area on the ground transportation curb, main level Follow the signs from the booth, turning right
Maritime Bus Ask at the Ground Transportation Booth Serves more than 40 places across the Maritimes

The schedule the airport links to shows the 320 about hourly, running to Scotia Square via Bridge Terminal, but check the current timetable.

Collecting someone? The airport offers a free Standby Lot beside the Tim Hortons at 311 Bell Blvd, with a maximum wait of 45 minutes. Drivers should come to the pick-up area only once the passenger is out with their bags, and waiting at the curb is not allowed.

What tends to go wrong on a Halifax arrival?

The most avoidable problem is a new passport. An eTA stays linked to the passport used in the application, so if you renewed yours after getting approval, the old approval does not follow you. Before the flight, check your eTA status with your passport and your application number or UCI side by side.

A second trap is the connection to the US after a daytime flight from Europe. With preclearance, the airport’s 4:30 p.m. processing deadline applies whatever the departure time says, so a late-afternoon onward flight can still be too late. Ask the airline before paying.

The third is a cruise passenger who assumes an eTA is unnecessary because “I am going on a ship”, then arrives in Halifax by plane. The ship does not need it. The aeroplane does.

The short version

  1. The airport’s non-stop list includes London, Dublin, Paris, Amsterdam and Frankfurt; check with the airline that your route runs on your dates.
  2. You need an eTA to board if your passport requires one; US citizens and visa holders are exceptions.
  3. At YHZ you use a kiosk and then an officer. There are no eGates, and the Advance Declaration is optional.
  4. On a domestic leg, show the passport you entered with; the name must match the ticket.
  5. A cruise needs an eTA only if you fly in to join it.
  6. US preclearance is in Halifax, with a 4:30 p.m. processing deadline per the airport; Free Flow is not.

FAQ

How early should I arrive at Halifax airport for an international flight? The airport suggests at least 3 hours before an international flight and 2 hours before a domestic one. For a US-bound flight, remember the preclearance deadline of 4:30 p.m. that the airport states for every passenger.
