Canada eTA Guides by Travel Task

Your passport nationality and how you’re arriving determine which document you need. Not cost, not processing speed, not what you wish were true. Everything else follows from that one rule. For sea arrivals, see Canada eTA for cruise and ferry passengers. To make that concrete: two travellers board the same flight from London to Toronto, both planning a two-week holiday, both carrying valid passports. One holds a British passport and needs an eTA (electronic travel authorization) before check-in even opens. The other holds a Moroccan passport and, depending on one additional factor, may also qualify for an eTA, or may need a full visitor visa. Same flight, same purpose, different answers, because the rule starts with the passport. ...

Short version: most Canada eTA applications are approved within minutes, by email. If yours needs a closer look, you get an email within 72 hours of applying that explains the next step, and the review can then take several days. Already applied? You can check your eTA status through a paid private service, separate from the Government of Canada. What Is a Canada eTA and Who Needs One? The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a digital entry requirement for visa-exempt foreign nationals flying into Canada. It’s linked electronically to your passport, so there’s no sticker or stamp involved, just an approval tied to your travel document. ...

Getting your eTA approval notification is genuinely good news — it means Canada’s immigration authority, IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada), has reviewed your application and issued an electronic Travel Authorization tied directly to your passport. The hard part is over, but there are a few practical things worth confirming before you pack your bags. This article walks you through exactly what that approval message means, how to verify everything is set up correctly, and what to do if something looks off. Think of it as your quick pre-flight sanity check — the kind a well-travelled friend would walk you through over coffee. ...

Many Global Entry members assume their U.S. trusted-traveller status carries weight in Canada. It doesn’t. You can hold a valid Global Entry card, have sailed through U.S. Customs and Border Protection kiosks for years, and still be turned away at the airline check-in desk for a flight to Toronto if you haven’t sorted out Canada’s own entry requirement first. The answer to the core question is this: Global Entry membership does not exempt you from Canada’s eTA, does not speed up the application, and is not visible to Canadian immigration systems in any way that helps you. If you’re unsure whether you need an eTA or a visa, the Canada eTA vs. visitor visa differences article explains how to tell them apart. American citizens with Global Entry can read do US citizens need a Canada eTA. ...

The short answer: the Canada eTA has a small government fee, you pay it once when you submit the form, and it is non-refundable. Some services help you fill in and check the form and charge a separate service fee for that help; that fee is not part of the government price. If you want that help, you can apply for a Canada eTA through a paid private service, separate from the Government of Canada. ...

When travel dates shift, the key question is whether the existing eTA remains valid and is still linked to the passport you will present at check-in. The sections below work through the situations that matter. What the eTA is linked to Your eTA is linked to the passport you used to apply. You need to present this passport when you check in for your flight to Canada. Validity period An eTA is valid for up to five years or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first. If you get a new passport, you need to get a new eTA. ...

Most parents assume an eTA is one form per family, the way a single booking covers everyone on a reservation. It isn’t. Each child who flies to Canada needs their own eTA application, applied for separately, linked to their own passport. That’s the first thing to get right. The second is harder to catch: if your child’s passport renews between the application and the trip, the eTA they already have becomes useless. ...

You’ve heard that Canada requires biometrics for immigration applications. But for an eTA? No. Here’s what actually happens at each stage. eTA applicants are explicitly exempt from providing biometrics. You don’t submit fingerprints. You don’t submit a photo through any biometric process. You fill in the application, pay the fee, and if it’s approved, the authorisation is linked electronically to your passport. That’s the whole thing. There is no appointment, no collection centre, no Biometric Instruction Letter. The requirement that has people worried simply doesn’t apply to this document. ...

Short version: a Canada eTA works only with the passport you applied with. If you renewed, replaced or lost that passport, you need a new eTA before you fly, even if the old one had not expired. You can apply for a new eTA through a paid private service, separate from the Government of Canada. A Canadian Electronic Travel Authorization is linked electronically to the passport used in the application. When you check in for a flight to Canada, airline staff scan your passport to confirm that a valid eTA is attached to it. The core rule follows directly from that: if you need an eTA, present the same valid passport that is linked to the valid eTA. ...

Many travellers with a valid U.S. visa assume it simplifies entry to Canada. It doesn’t. Your passport’s country of issue is what determines whether you need an eTA, a visitor visa, or neither—the U.S. visa is only relevant for certain nationalities. Hold a British, Australian, or French passport and your U.S. visa is irrelevant to Canada’s requirements: you need an eTA regardless, and you would have needed one even without the visa. Hold a passport from a visa-required country and your valid U.S. visa may actually open a different door—eTA eligibility instead of the longer visitor visa route. The two situations look similar from the outside but follow completely separate tracks. ...
